Bashar al-Assad

Damascus strongman, ousted

Bashar al-Assad is the Syrian dictator who ruled from 2000 until his overthrow in 2024.

He inherited power from his father Hafez al-Assad, continuing a family dynasty that had controlled Syria since 1970.

His brutal response to the 2011 Arab Spring protests sparked a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.

His regime became synonymous with barrel bombs, chemical weapons attacks on civilians, and systematic torture.
