Aperture

Cupertino photo organizer

An aperture is an opening, gap, or hole—especially one that admits light.

The term appears most often in photography and optics, where aperture refers to the adjustable opening in a lens that controls how much light reaches the film or sensor: Widen the aperture for low-light conditions.

A larger aperture creates a shallower depth of field, blurring backgrounds.

The word extends to any narrow opening: light streaming through an aperture in the rocks.
