embrasure
Fortification window slot
An embrasure is an opening in a wall or parapet, typically splayed wider on the inside than the outside, designed to allow defenders to fire weapons while remaining protected.
In fortifications, embrasures appear in battlements and gun emplacements: The soldiers fired through the embrasures.
The term also applies to the similar splayed recess around a window or door in thick walls, where the angled sides admit more light.
