f-number

Aperture size indicator

F-number is a measure of a camera lens's light-gathering ability, expressed as the ratio of focal length to aperture diameter.

A lower f-number (like f/2) means a wider aperture that admits more light and produces shallower depth of field; a higher f-number (like f/16) means a smaller aperture with greater depth of field.

Photographers adjust f-numbers to control exposure and focus: She shot at f/1.8 for that blurry background effect.
