light well
Vertical light shaft
A light well is a vertical shaft built into a structure to allow natural light and air to reach interior spaces that would otherwise be dark.
Common in dense urban buildings and deep floor plans, light wells extend from the roof down through multiple floors: The apartment's only window faced the light well.
Also called an air shaft or airshaft.
