arrow slit
Defensive wall opening
An arrow slit is a narrow vertical opening in a castle or fortification wall, designed for archers to shoot through while remaining protected.
The opening is typically wider on the inside than the outside, allowing defenders to aim across a range of angles while presenting minimal target to attackers: Archers positioned themselves at the arrow slits along the tower.
