Alsace-Lorraine

Disputed Rhine region

Alsace-Lorraine is a region in northeastern France along the German border, historically contested between France and Germany.

Germany annexed it after the Franco-Prussian War in 1871; France reclaimed it after World War I.

The region's back-and-forth ownership made it a symbol of Franco-German rivalry and a flashpoint for nationalist sentiment through the early twentieth century.
