xylograph

Carved block print

A xylograph is a print made from a carved wooden block, or the block itself.

The technique predates movable type—entire pages of text and images were carved in reverse, inked, and pressed onto paper.

The museum displayed medieval xylographs alongside early printed books.

The term appears mainly in discussions of printing history.
