steel engraving
Incised metal printmaking
Steel engraving is a printmaking technique where an image is incised into a steel plate, which is then inked and pressed onto paper.
The hardness of steel allows for finer detail and longer print runs than copper engraving.
The term also refers to a print made by this process: a steel engraving of the Capitol building.
The technique was widely used in the nineteenth century for banknotes, book illustrations, and portraits.
