bast
Fiber from bark
Bast is the fibrous inner bark of certain plants, particularly linden, flax, and hemp, used historically for making rope, matting, and textiles.
The fibers are strong yet flexible, prized for cordage before synthetic materials became dominant.
In botany, bast refers more technically to the phloem tissue that transports nutrients through a plant's vascular system.
Traditional bast sandals are still made in parts of rural Japan.
