parenchyma

Organ's working tissue

Parenchyma is the functional tissue of an organ, as distinguished from its structural or connective tissue.

In medicine, the parenchyma of the liver or kidney refers to the cells that perform the organ's essential work.

In botany, parenchyma denotes the soft, thin-walled cells that make up much of a plant's mass, including the fleshy parts of fruits and the pith of stems.

The tumor had invaded the lung parenchyma.
