companion cells
Sieve tube helpers
Companion cells are specialized cells in the phloem of vascular plants, positioned alongside sieve tube elements.
They provide metabolic support to the sieve tubes, which lack nuclei and most organelles, helping transport sugars and nutrients throughout the plant.
Each companion cell connects to its sieve tube element through numerous plasmodesmata.
