immunodeficiency
Compromised bodily defenses
Immunodeficiency is a weakened or absent immune response, leaving the body vulnerable to infections it would normally fight off.
The condition may be inherited or acquired—HIV causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
The patient's immunodeficiency made even minor infections dangerous.
Immune deficiency syndrome
- HIVAIDS-causing retrovirus
- DiGeorge syndromeChromosomal microdeletion disorder
- leukopeniaLow white cell count
- neutropeniaInsufficient neutrophils in blood
Adaptive immunity cells
- T-cellsThymus-matured immune lymphocytes
- B-cellsAntibody-secreting immune cells
- white blood cellsPathogen-fighting components of plasma
- immunoglobulinsProtective blood proteins
Passed through generations
- congenitalExisting from birth
- mutationPermanent DNA alteration
- carrierOne that transports
- inheritanceProperty received from ancestors
chromosomal · monogenic · genetic screening · newborn screening · prenatal diagnosis · family history · pedigree · genotype
Drug blocking viral reproduction
- bone marrow transplantInfusing healthy hematopoietic cells
- stem cell transplantInfusion of blood-forming precursors
- gene therapyMedical DNA modification treatment
- interferonImmune response protein
Easily influenced or harmed
- compromisedMade vulnerable to harm
- at-riskSubject to potential harm
- recurrent infectionsRepeatedly returning illness episodes
- chronic infectionsProlonged pathogenic conditions
