basophil

Histamine-releasing leukocyte

A basophil is a type of white blood cell characterized by granules that stain with basic dyes.

Basophils are the rarest of the circulating white blood cells, making up less than one percent of the total.

They play a role in allergic reactions and inflammatory responses, releasing histamine and other chemicals: The patient's basophil count was elevated.
