whalemen
Hunters of leviathans
Whalemen are men who hunt whales or work on whaling ships.
The term belongs to the 19th-century heyday of commercial whaling, when ships might spend years at sea pursuing sperm whales and right whales for their oil and baleen.
The whalemen of New Bedford sailed to the ends of the earth.
The singular whaleman is less common than the collective.
