harpooner
Whale boat crewman
A harpooner is a person who throws or operates a harpoon, the barbed spear used in hunting whales and large fish.
In traditional whaling, the harpooner held a position of skill and danger, standing at the bow to strike the whale: The harpooner readied himself as the boat approached.
The term appears in maritime literature and historical accounts of the whaling industry.
