whaleman
Leviathan pursuit sailor
A whaleman is a man who hunts whales—a whaler.
The term belongs to the era of commercial whaling, when ships spent years at sea pursuing sperm whales and right whales for their oil and baleen: The whaleman had been gone from Nantucket for three years.
The word appears throughout Melville's *Moby-Dick*.
