poxvirus

Lesion-causing infectious agent

A poxvirus is any of a family of large DNA viruses that cause diseases characterized by skin lesions or pox—including smallpox, monkeypox, and cowpox.

These viruses infect vertebrates and insects, replicating in the cytoplasm rather than the nucleus of host cells.

The vaccine used cowpox, a related poxvirus, to protect against smallpox.
