epitope

Immune recognition site

An epitope is the specific part of an antigen that an antibody recognizes and binds to—the molecular "target" on a pathogen or foreign substance that triggers an immune response.

A single antigen may have multiple epitopes, each potentially recognized by different antibodies.

The term appears in immunology, vaccine development, and allergy research: The vaccine targets several epitopes on the spike protein.
