undercroft

Vault beneath church

An undercroft is a vaulted cellar or basement beneath a building, especially a church or medieval structure.

The space typically has a low ceiling supported by stone arches: The cathedral's undercroft now houses a museum.

Unlike ordinary basements, undercrofts are often architecturally significant spaces that were designed for storage, burial, or refuge.
