turbojets

High-speed propulsion

Turbojets are jet engines that generate thrust by compressing air, mixing it with fuel, igniting the mixture, and expelling hot gases at high speed.

The term also refers to aircraft powered by such engines.

Turbojets dominated early jet aviation but have largely been replaced by more fuel-efficient turbofans for most applications: The museum displayed vintage turbojets from the Cold War era.
