roughshod

Harshly over others

Roughshod originally described horses fitted with shoes having projecting nails or points for better traction on rough terrain.

The word survives almost exclusively in the phrase ride roughshod over, meaning to treat someone or something with brutal disregard: The company rode roughshod over environmental regulations.

The image is of iron-shod hooves trampling whatever lies beneath.
