textfile
Digital words stored
A textfile is a computer file containing plain text—letters, numbers, and basic punctuation stored without special formatting.
Unlike word processor documents or spreadsheets, textfiles contain no fonts, images, or complex layout information.
They're readable by virtually any program and remain the standard format for code, configuration files, and simple notes: I saved the instructions in a textfile.
