RTTY
Typed radio transmissions
RTTY stands for radioteletype, a method of transmitting text over radio waves using tonal shifts to represent characters.
Once the dominant mode for commercial and military communications, it now survives mainly among amateur radio operators: He made contact with a station in Japan on RTTY.
The technology dates to the mid-20th century but retains hobbyist appeal for its reliability under poor signal conditions.
