teleprinters
Wired text machines
Teleprinters are electromechanical devices that send and receive typed messages over telegraph or telephone lines.
A user types on a keyboard, and the machine transmits the text as electrical signals; a receiving teleprinter prints the message automatically.
Before fax machines and email, teleprinters were standard equipment in newsrooms, businesses, and military communications: The news came over the teleprinter.
Also called teletypewriters or TTYs.
