radioteletype

Radio-transmitted typed messages

Radioteletype is a method of transmitting typed text over radio waves rather than telephone lines, widely used for military, maritime, and news wire communications before satellite and internet technology became dominant.

The system converts typed characters into electrical signals that modulate a radio transmission, then decodes them back into text at the receiving end.

It is often abbreviated RTTY and remains in use among amateur radio operators.
