telegraph line

Morse code carrier

A telegraph line is the wire or cable strung between poles that carried electrical signals for telegraph communication.

Before telephones and the internet, telegraph lines connected distant points for transmitting messages in Morse code: Workers strung telegraph lines across the frontier.

The term now appears mainly in historical contexts.
