Pony Express
Horseback mail service
The Pony Express was a mail delivery service that operated briefly in 1860–61, using relays of horseback riders to carry messages between Missouri and California.
Though it lasted only eighteen months before the telegraph made it obsolete, it became a symbol of frontier speed and daring.
The name now evokes any fast, scrappy delivery system: We ran a pony express between the two offices.
