shortwave radio
International broadcast receiver
Shortwave radio refers to radio transmission using frequencies between about 3 and 30 megahertz, which can travel long distances by bouncing off the ionosphere.
Before the internet, shortwave was how people heard broadcasts from distant countries—the BBC World Service, Voice of America, Radio Moscow.
Amateur radio operators still use shortwave bands.
The term also names receivers designed to pick up these frequencies: My grandfather's shortwave radio could pull in stations from around the world.
