Botany Bay

Sydney's historic inlet

Botany Bay is an inlet on the coast of New South Wales, Australia, just south of Sydney.

Captain James Cook first landed there in 1770, and the name became synonymous with the British penal colony established nearby in 1788.

In historical usage, Botany Bay often referred to Australian convict transportation generally, regardless of the actual destination: He was sentenced to Botany Bay for theft.

The bay itself is now bordered by Sydney's suburbs and its international airport.
