changeup

Slower-than-expected delivery

A changeup is a baseball pitch designed to deceive the batter by looking like a fastball but arriving much slower.

The pitcher uses the same arm motion as a fastball while gripping the ball deeper in the palm, reducing its speed.

This disrupts the batter's timing.

Outside baseball, changeup describes any unexpected shift in approach or tempo: The detective's friendly questioning was a changeup from his earlier interrogation style.
