sealcoat

Pavement's protective layer

Sealcoat is a protective coating applied to asphalt surfaces like driveways and parking lots.

The treatment—typically a coal tar or asphalt emulsion—fills small cracks, protects against weathering and oxidation, and restores the dark black appearance: The HOA requires sealcoating every three years.

As a verb, to sealcoat is to apply this treatment.
