tailhook

Deck landing device

A tailhook is a hook mounted on the underside of a naval aircraft's tail, used to catch arresting cables stretched across an aircraft carrier's deck.

This mechanism brings planes to a rapid stop on the short runway: The pilot felt the jolt as the tailhook caught the wire.

Tailhook landings are among the most demanding maneuvers in aviation.
