brake drum

Wheel's stopping surface

A brake drum is a cylindrical metal component in drum brakes, attached to a wheel and rotating with it.

Brake shoes press outward against the drum's inner surface to create friction and slow the vehicle.

Drum brakes have largely given way to disc brakes on modern cars, though they remain common on rear wheels and heavy trucks.
