Deck landing gear
A tailhook is a hook extending from the rear of a carrier-based aircraft, designed to catch arresting cables on the flight deck and bring the plane to a rapid stop.
The hook deploys during landing and retracts during flight.
The pilot lowered the tailhook on final approach.
Tailhook also refers to the annual convention of naval aviators, named for the device.
