ejection seat

Pilot escape mechanism

An ejection seat is a seat designed to propel its occupant clear of an aircraft in an emergency, typically using explosive charges or rockets.

The pilot pulls a handle and is launched upward, after which a parachute deploys automatically.

Figuratively, to hit the ejection seat is to bail out of any failing situation.
