kettle drum

Tunable copper drum

A kettle drum is a large drum shaped like a bowl or kettle, with a membrane stretched across the top.

Unlike most drums, kettle drums can be tuned to specific pitches by adjusting the tension of the drumhead.

They appear in orchestras and marching bands, usually in pairs.

Also called timpani.
