bodhran

Celtic frame drum

A bodhran is a shallow, handheld frame drum used in traditional Irish music.

The player holds it vertically and strikes the goatskin head with a short wooden beater called a tipper or cipín, producing a deep, resonant pulse that drives jigs and reels: The bodhran kept time while the fiddle carried the melody.
