timbrel

Ancient hand drum

A timbrel is a small hand drum similar to a tambourine, often fitted with jingling metal discs.

The word appears mainly in biblical and literary contexts: Miriam took a timbrel in her hand.

In modern usage, tambourine has largely replaced it.
