phase-out

Slow winding down

A phase-out is a gradual withdrawal or discontinuation of something: the phase-out of leaded gasoline, a nuclear phase-out.

The verb phrase out means to eliminate in stages rather than all at once: They're phasing out the old software over the next year.

The hyphenated form is the noun; the two-word form is the verb.
