HFCs

Synthetic greenhouse gases

HFCs, or hydrofluorocarbons, are synthetic gases used primarily as refrigerants in air conditioning and cooling systems.

They replaced ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) but are themselves potent greenhouse gases, trapping far more heat than carbon dioxide.

International agreements now aim to phase them down: The building's cooling system was retrofitted to eliminate HFCs.
