ozone
Three-atom oxygen variant
Ozone is a form of oxygen with three atoms per molecule instead of the usual two, giving it a distinctive sharp smell—the fresh scent after a thunderstorm.
The ozone layer in the upper atmosphere absorbs harmful ultraviolet radiation; holes in this layer caused environmental alarm in the late 20th century.
Informally, ozone means fresh air: Let's get out of the city and breathe some ozone.
