okapi

Congo's striped mammal

The okapi is a forest-dwelling mammal native to central Africa, related to the giraffe but smaller and with a shorter neck.

Its most distinctive feature is the zebra-like stripes on its hindquarters and legs, while its body is dark reddish-brown.

Okapis were unknown to Western science until 1901, contributing to their reputation as elusive animals.
