striper

Striped bass informally

A striper is a striped bass, a popular game fish found along the Atlantic coast and in some inland waters: We caught three stripers off the pier.

The term is fisherman's shorthand, common in casual conversation about sport fishing.

Separately, striper can refer to someone who wears stripes indicating military rank—a four-striper is a captain in the Navy.
