cupbearer
Monarch's drink servant
A cupbearer is a person who serves drinks, especially wine, to a ruler or noble.
In ancient courts, the position carried considerable trust and status—the cupbearer tasted drinks to detect poison and often became a confidant to the monarch.
The role appears frequently in biblical and classical texts: Nehemiah was cupbearer to the Persian king.
