square rig
横帆 in English
Square rig is a sailing arrangement in which the principal sails are set on horizontal yards mounted at right angles to the ship's length, rather than along the centerline.
This configuration, typical of large traditional sailing ships like clipper ships and tall ships, excels at running before the wind but is less efficient for sailing into it.
A vessel fitted with such sails is called square-rigged.
The old frigate was square-rigged on all three masts.
