barkentine

Three-masted sailing ship

A barkentine is a sailing ship with three or more masts, square-rigged on the foremast and fore-and-aft rigged on the others.

This hybrid design combined the power of square sails for ocean crossings with the easier handling of fore-and-aft sails for smaller crews.

Also spelled barquentine.
