squaddie
Enlisted military personnel
A squaddie is a British slang term for a low-ranking soldier, especially a private in the army.
The word carries connotations of ordinary enlisted men rather than officers—the rank and file who do the grunt work: The squaddies were out on patrol.
Sometimes used affectionately, sometimes dismissively.
