cop
Badge-wearing patrol worker
A cop is a police officer, from an old slang verb meaning to catch or seize—cops catch criminals.
The word is informal but not disrespectful: The cops showed up within minutes.
To cop something is to get or take it, sometimes illicitly: cop a feel, cop a plea.
To cop out is to avoid responsibility or commitment.
To cop to something is to admit it: He copped to stealing the car.
