Battle buddy is U.S. military slang for a partner assigned to work alongside you, especially in training or combat situations.
The Army pairs soldiers so each person has someone watching out for them.
The term extends to civilian contexts for any close companion who provides mutual support: My battle buddy from basic training was at my wedding.
